Top 3 Homeschooling Tips

Gone are the days when homeschooling was seen as an extreme choice. Families homeschool their children for a variety of reasons, including medical, social, and academic. No matter your reason for homeschooling, I have three tips that can make your homeschooling journey a little easier.

Please note: You should always refer to your home state standards regarding rules and regulations to ensure you are in compliance.

Think Big: Your first step should be to sit down and determine your major goals for your student(s). You can do this on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis. When I work with students, I start by setting yearly goals and work backward to establish goals for each month and quarter. Depending on your state laws, you may need to use state or Common Core standards to guide you in selecting certain goals, but you can always add additional ones. I like to add social and emotional skills for my students.

Think of your curriculum as a support: It is easy to get caught up in the overwhelming world of curriculum. Luckily, when you have your major goals selected, you are not beholden to a certain curriculum. Any time I assign work, select a text, or start a skill, I ask myself, “How will this get me toward my end goal?” It is not about the quantity of work you assign, but the quality. Since you are focusing on one or a few students at a time, if they master a skill quickly, there is no need to continue teaching it. Likewise, if they need more practice and you are out of materials, you can look in other places for resources.

Break it up: You do not have to be a one-person show. Even classroom teachers do not teach everything. There are teachers who come in to teach art, music, health, etc. It is good for your student to see how different people think and do things. Consider hiring a tutor or signing your student up for a class. It does not mean you have failed or are giving up. It is actually really beneficial for your student.
